"Adelaide is a thoroughly modern town, with all the merits and all the defects attaching to novelty. It does not possess the spirit of enterprise to so adventurous a degree as Melbourne, but neither does it approach to the languor of Sydney." - R. Twopeny, 1883

Feelin' Hot

Today is New Year's Day and it is 41 degrees. It's the hottest Adelaide New Year's Day since 1900.

See below for how the weather was reported on 2 January 1900, from The Advertiser. I love the first part: "New Year's Day came in hot. Perspiring mortals wearily tossed and turned in their beds or walked the rooms of their houses in the vain endeavour to find a cooler place". There just isn't enough narrative in newspaper pieces today, in my opinion.

[I also wonder what the perspiring people of 1900 who were tossing and turning in their beds would think of the people of 2012, who probably weren't sleeping and were more likely at the beach or in the city. Did people even stay out until midnight on New Year's back then? If anyone knows, please tell me! :)]
